Whether you’re one of the many who decide to participate in the ancient custom of making a new year’s resolution or not, there’s no arguing that the inspirational energy inherent in January touches us with hope and vision for a better year ahead.
What would you like to create or experience in 2020? The easiest and most fun aspect of setting a new year’s resolution is this first step of simply deciding, but even how we identify our resolution can set us up for success or failure. Keep your goal within realistic measure.
For example, instead of saying you’d like to lose weight (which is too broad to require any effort), choose instead to set actionable and measurable goals, such as determining to hike once a week or cutting out sugar or bread for 5 days a week. Tracking has been shown to increase our degree of commitment to our goals and it’s directly connected to keeping our energy high and our thinking focused.
While this is a practical approach, it overlaps with 3 energy rituals you can use to help you stay clear, determined and focused as you grow yourself into your new year, new reality & a new you.
Setting the Stage for New Life: 3 Energy Rituals
The desire to improve is an inherent drive of your Higher-Soul/Higher Self. This Soul energy, I like to refer to as the most real aspect of you (The Real You) and always a being of love, light & power, is thirsty for evolvement. Anything that we do to stop ourselves from evolving will hurt more than the movement forward irrespective of how much ‘lower-nature fear’ we may find our psyche’s mired in.
The fear that causes immobility, or any other uncomfortable feeling that kills our focus or causes us to defer to old habits, shows up as congestion in the energetic anatomy (your chakras & auras). This heaviness literally causes the body to take the path of least resistance, so when it comes to the first ritual, you simply have to commit to taking in more life force to build up the soul-energy (pranic life force) in your body, revitalizing you & stilling your mind from resistant mind-noise.
The 3 energy rituals I am about to describe work best with a good foundation of intentional breathing. Inhaling through the nose, for a count of 6 and holding for 3 counts and then, through the nose exhaling for a count of 6 and holding at the bottom for 3, is one cycle. Practice 6 cycles of this rhythmic breathing 1-3xs a day. You can make this a ritual by doing it at the same time daily, and by cleansing the space where you do your breathing, thoroughly.
Energy Ritual #1
Our spaces carry the energy of our dominant thoughts, so that if we are doubting ourselves, or processing resistance, the negative quality of the energy will reduce the effectiveness of the breathwork practice.
I like to use palo santo or sage, as the natural woodsy aromas induce an automatic connection with Mother Nature instantly connecting me to her power.
Practice a ritual of lighting a bit of sage or palo santo, waving the sweet-smelling smoke throughout your bedroom and living space, before your morning breathwork. This will increase the effectiveness of your breathing and help you to stay positive throughout the day. It may also be wise to energetically cleanse your office or workspace if that’s possible.
Energy Ritual #2
Next, the Universe responds to our repeated written and spoken intention. Select a special intention notebook; a place to write out your intentions in plain and simple terms, while letting yourself feel happy at having already received it. That may seem too simple, but it’s the feeling aspect of this that makes it a ritual and quite powerful.
Notice any negative dialog that arises within you, and record those voices as well, so you can notice what the subconscious mind is communicating to you about yourself. End the writing session with 3- 6 easy breaths and a feeling of gratitude for having your goal met.
There is something very powerful about simply telling the brain “we’ve already received it; thank you”. When you speak as if it has come to pass, a lot of energy congeals around that thoughtform and builds momentum and motivation within you.
An example might look like this, “I am so happy and so excited I’ve dropped sugar and used natural sweeteners 5 days a week, causing my energy to increase and my body’s weight to normalize!” Write your intention down at least 4-8 times each session. If you have little time, even writing it once can jump start the energy to work in your favor.
Energy Ritual #3
There’s nothing like aromas to move our energies into a level of emotionality that delivers that energetic punch to our lives. My 3 favorites to use are essential oils of orange (the oil of abundance according to MacDonald in his book Emotional Healing With Essential Oils), lemon (the oil of focus) or the smell of apple pie, because it reminds me of all things cozy, safe and delicious.
You may use a drop or two on your ajna chakra which is located at the space between your eyebrows, just before you write in your intention journal. The smell not only engages your emotions and senses, but etherically cultivates the energies of power and focus to help you maintain sustained action over a period of time.
Making your New Year’s resolutions a spiritual endeavor through rituals can create deeper meaning and intensify your commitment to seeing your changes manifest in a new you. Whatever your course, we congratulate you ahead of time, for evolving into on a better version of yourself through intentional breathing combined with the 3 energy rituals of space clearing, intention journaling and essential oil healing!
