You have to believe in yourself. ~Sun Tzu
Tips for almanac use: All the aspects can be felt in advance of the date of occurrence. It is good policy to view these as due dates for various energies and prepare accordingly for one’s context. Some slower interactions can be felt a month in advance, so it’s wise to read ahead and ritual up. When we proactively manifest these symbols then the world doesn’t have to do it for us.
April. This really is a fire festival of some sort. It’s rather scary and intense, but offers incredible beauty and growth as a balance. It’s a bit like watching a community fireworks show while the other side of town is burning to the ground. Or maybe some extreme sport is a better analogy: super fun if it’s your thing, but freaky if something goes awry. Maybe mountain biking down a steep trail would be apt. Anyway, the beginning of the month is pretty hectic and crazy busy and that speed will be maintained consistently across the month; so hopefully we are well prepared and equipped. ‘On your marks…’
Mars moves into Aries on the night of the 1st, blasting us off into the new month at dangerous speeds. Mars will remain in this potent place until May 11th, and we will all have to duck, weave and jab accordingly. Patience and calm will be at a premium and there won’t be much time to recuperate or integrate. There is a lot of room for growth, but make sure to duck the punches, or at least block.
Venus sextiles Pluto on the 2nd, adding some more intensity to our relations and challenging us to stay balanced and present. This combination supports spring cleaning of many varieties; so be prepared to let go.
The New Moon is in mid-Aries at 7:32 a.m. (PDT) on the 3rd is a firestorm of freshness and ferocity that will both reinvigorate us and wipe us out. This lunation features 6 planets in an Aries conflagration: If we aren’t well prepared, or we resist these forces, this may be exciting, racing, ruthless and hardcore. However, great strides can be made towards holistic integrity in ourselves and our relationships, but it will require a lot of careful balancing. A ceremony of rebirth through fire would be appropriate. Be like the phoenix.
Mars conjoins Uranus, also on the 3rd, raising the stakes of the game. It’s kind of a breakthrough or breakdown scenario; a powder keg or freedom, or some bizarre combination of the two. Avoid rash actions and shaky people. It’s highly preferable to work through these volatile energies internally, so figure out a way, or a ceremony, to honor the call for change in relative safety.
The Sun opposes Saturn, also on the 3rd, providing contrast to the Mars-Uranus tango previously mentioned. Sun-Saturn is asking us to stay aware and respectful of all the components in the machinery of worlds. Work on and maintain integrity with maturity and calm, or figure out how to. If something hasn’t been working, it may be time to release it.
Neptune moves into Pisces on the 4th, when he starts the preview of the upcoming 14 ear stay, before revisiting Aquarius from August 4th through February 3rd of 2012. This is a massive shift in the celestial currents that initiates a whole new class of life. It’s taking the escape-transcend-or-surrender dynamic into more spiritual and feeling realms; effectively plunging us deeper into our own psyches. Keeping the perceptions on an even keel is ultra crucial, especially in this early phase, as it sets the momentum; don’t indulge paranoia and beware of untested faith and optimism. Don’t go, just flow.
The Sun conjoins Jupiter on the 6th, bringing a much needed dose of optimistic expectations. It’s a reminder that the crux is usually centered on how we perceive and how we opt to respond. Maintaining faith in our ability to respond appropriately to the joys and the troubles is crucial. Become more present.
Pluto stations retrograde on the 9th, starting another session of plowing around and uncovering the un-integrated for processing. This time around powerlessness is a big issue; how disturbed are we by our lack of control in this world? How do we handle those daunting unknowns? The idea is to stay grounded and self-challenging but with tenderness for the elusive and a deep respect for the darkness. Make room for more light.
Mercury conjoins the Sun on the 9th, prompting us to undo more hyper-criticality of the mind, especially regarding our self-condemnatory tendencies. Acknowledge the difficult realities but relax the hyper-vigilance: Be sharp, not harsh.
Mars squares Pluto on the 11th, frothing up potential cathartic change or possibly drama. It’s very intense and is best channeled into doing something about which you are madly passionate. This combination could also help to mellow the current anxiousness and quell some of the latent fears, but it really depends on the momentum we have within us.
Mercury conjoins Jupiter, also on the 11th, begging us to ditch whacky thought constructs and belief systems. Basically, any type of mental/philosophical extremism should be deflated and brought closer to the middle ground, or at least the ground. Optimism is great, but this is no time for flights of fancy or whim.
The Full Moon on the 17th falls in late Libra at 7:44p.m. (PDT), bringing the last couple of weeks to their emotional peak. This is when the waves will start to level out a bit and enjoying the ride may become a little easier. Clearly the journey is not yet over, but at least the initial impact and its shock waves have passed. Stay ready.
Mars opposes Saturn on the 18th, challenging us forcefully to deal with reality despite its harshness and to cut our losses where necessary. This will be most difficult for some and a sort of relief for others. Patience and an adjustable measuring stick is crucial, for we are not the arbiters of due time.
Mercury conjoins Mars on the 19th, opening the door to some tense communications and hectic driving possibilities. This is a tricky one because it supports hyper-vigilance regarding what we let in, but cautions strongly against blasting our issues outward. It’s good to be assertive, i.e. defend our borders, but pushing into others’ space–aggression–is really not a good idea.
The Sun moves into Taurus on the 20th, finally slowing things down a smidge. It’s time to stabilize the new growth and tend to the gardens in general. Bring it back to the practical, to the rhythms of the Earth. Look forward to your fruits of the labor and don’t bemoan the rest.
The Sun sextiles Neptune, also on the 20th. This will facilitate calm and consistency only if we are surrendered and flowing. If not, then it could be awfully confusing with no clarity promised. There are no guarantees, and definitely few pre-assurances, but ‘twas ever thus.
Venus moves into Aries on the 21st, adding more flames to the mix until May 15th. It’s tough to stay centered and content consistently, but that’s what is being asked of us. This could help us really appreciate the warmth of the blaze but we may need to move closer or get farther away, like soon. Contentment in context is the goal.
Venus conjoins Uranus on the 22nd, shaking it up. It would be wise to do something exciting and fun and out of the ordinary and let loose with it. Get dancing or moving somehow, because boredom is a nasty beast to tame.
Mercury turns direct on the 23rd, allowing us to start the resolution period after a brutal retrograde. Issues should be more easily resolved as the dust begins to settle, but there’s much to integrate. Try not to over-think; let the backburner of the mind do its thing.
Venus squares Pluto on the 27th, pulling relationships deeper and asking for a purification of our desires and values. It’s a great time for cleansing and purging various fears and unnecessaries. Let the emotional pains of the past go.
The Sun trines Pluto, also on the 27th, dredging up more of our complexes and paradoxes. This could exacerbate the relationship work demanded by the Venus-Pluto if things are taken too personally or from cross-contamination. As usual, it’s much better to process these dynamics internally before involving others.
Venus opposes Saturn on the 30th, bringing trust and fear issues to the fore. Take responsibility for your boundaries and make sure that you are supporting yourself in all endeavors without impinging on others. Respect is paramount.
Mars conjoins Jupiter, also on the 30th, launching us forth. This is an explosive energy, contrasting the heaviness of the Venus-Saturn interaction, which could be extra dangerous for troubled relationships, or cathartic. Either way, now is the time to figure out where we are headed and how we are going to land.
So, it’s a conflagration of rather eternal lessons; it’s a lot and it is extreme. But it’s all relative and, let’s face it, times are nuts. So, if you’re still standing, staying authentic and in one piece (and not bleeding too badly), then you’re doing pretty well. This month will surely introduce and rile up all sorts of craziness. It will mellow out eventually, but, for now, what can we really do but roll with it and try to enjoy the show when we can. Have fun.
