The coward dies a thousand deaths, the brave man… only five hundred.~Meredith Willson
Tips for almanac use: All the aspects can be felt in advance of the date of occurrence. It is good policy to view these as due dates for various energies and prepare accordingly for one’s context. Some slower interactions can be felt a month in advance, so it’s wise to read ahead and ritual up. When we proactively manifest these symbols then the world doesn’t have to do it for us.
February looks like it’ll take us up down and all around, but where it stops we just don’t know. The focus is on us doing our own dance while treating everybody else as equals on the dance floor. Let freedom course through your body as if you were grooving in your living room, but remain aware of others so as to avoid collisions. Most importantly, though, keep dancing.
Venus sextiles Neptune on the 1st, enhancing the urge to escape into adventure or fantasy. Time spent in contemplation or enjoying soothing music or company would be good. Take deep breaths and enjoy whatever relief can be had.
Venus squares Uranus on the 2nd, bringing more volatility to our relationships and financial situations-or at least bringing issues up to the surface. Strike out and be creative instead of bristling against the unpredictability of life. There are no guarantees.
Mercury sextiles Uranus, also on the 2nd. This tends to get the mind all frothed up without a clear destination. We’re still steeping in the remnants of times gone by and it’s a good time for trying to integrate what we should while releasing any attachment to the rest.
The New Moon is also on the 2nd, in mid-Aquarius, at 6:31pm Pacific. It’s time to release that which is hindering a re-inspiration. We are better served by self-coaching and self-cheerleading our way through this labyrinth because, like Ariadne, everbody else is busy caring for their own.
Mercury moves into Aquarius on the 3rd until the 21st. This dynamic transit is urging us to test our hypotheses in the light of reality and adjust as needed. Stubborn determination is far better when balanced with adaptability.
Venus moves into Capricorn on the 3rd through March 1st. Venus will make us work harder before getting to the relaxation and fun. Our relations will have to be taken deeper but this should be tempered by much maturity. Respect that this can take time and space is also sometimes needed.
The Sun conjoins Mars on the 4th, blasting us off towards greater concrete action or sending us into a tizzy. Patience is recommended but be ready to strike while the iron is hot.
Mercury sextiles Jupiter on the 5th. We are being offered some unique perspectives on old belief systems, but we may have to look for them. Perspective clearly isn’t everything, but it is an awful lot.
The Sun trines Saturn, also on the 5th, which can be rather sobering but could also confirm growth and progress, even if they don’t meet expectations. Support and consolidate the good; learn from the rest and do your best.
Mars trines Saturn on the 6th, revisiting yesterday’s theme but with more eagerness or impatience and passion or frustration. It’s hard to rush things to readiness when the development process has its own plan. In other words, it’s hard to start cooking until you’re in the kitchen. But feel free to plan it out.
Venus squares Jupiter on the 6th. This would be great for doing something romantic and/or artistic, escaping in nature or losing yourself to something awe-inspiring. Keep in mind that the grass usually only looks greener from a distance (light has its quirks.)
Chiron moves Pisces on the 8th. I don’t usually write about Chiron but this is a big shift: He’s been in Aquarius since early 2005 and will stay in Pisces until April of 2018. I would hope that it will help lighten our disillusionment levels with society and humanity by pushing the spiritual ideals that have been projected onto our species as goal posts back into their proper place. This world of physicality has never been a cake walk and it never will be, but we should still walk through this world with faith and strive to leave it in better shape than we found it. Honoring how this world functions doesn’t have to swing past realism into cynicism.
Venus conjoins Pluto on the 9th, dragging the demons out from under the bed and propelling us into a hopefully cathartic release. It’s a sort-and-purge reorganization issue, whether with our possessions and/or our people. Check the expiration date.
Mercury trines Saturn on the 14th, pulling us to visit with our priority lists and plans of action. Hopefully this will get our noses closer to those grindstones without bringing hyper-urgency or fearful ruminations. Stay calm; deep breaths.
The Sun conjoins Neptune on the 17th, sponsoring some escapist and/or spiritual yearnings. Life is a paradox wherein we are all alone together and hence should savor all the good connections of which we partake. Isolationism is a real illusion.
The Full Moon is the last degree of Leo on the 18th at 12:36am. It’s a very potent lunation, begging us to relax and embrace our ideals and principles concurrently. It is challenging because we often project our spiritual ideals onto reality which can sponsor unnecessary disappointment when viewed literally. Somehow we need to find the quiet space beyond (within) the paradoxes—the halcyon in the middle of the storms.
Venus squares Saturn on the 18th, which could be somewhat disheartening. This is best viewed as a day to give thanks and affirm the love that surrounds us, but it could also swing the other way if people are shirking responsibilities and indulging in blame. Be caring and careful.
The Sun moves into Pisces on the 18th. This time will be more emotionally tender and sensitive to outside influence. We should watch what comes to us, but be wary of viewing it as a direct or literal reflection. There are so many intertwined levels of being and now is not the best time to deconstruct them or to take form-based action either.
Mercury conjoins Mars (2:44pm) on the 20th, before Mercury and then Mars conjoin Neptune (5:08pm, 8:19pm). It’s a very potent day that brings to mind a nature stroll through a minefield. Awareness is clearly crucial but not all the ‘traps’ will be readily visible, so a reliance on intuition is also required. It’s definitely not a time to mix sharp implements or tongues with religion or drugs. If you have to be out in the world, stay alert for danger and avoid conflict; ‘live defensively.’
Mercury moves into Pisces on the 21st, until March 9th. This placement favors a wandering mind, unencumbered by the frontal cortex enough to release fresh solutions and vantages into the consciousness. The goal is to reconcile and neutralize cognitive dissonance wherever we may find it, in ourselves that is. Avoid looking for that which can’t be found.
Mars moves into Pisces on the 22nd, stirring the emotional/psychic pot up a bit. The astro-weather has us rather fatigued, so this could toss some irritability on top. However, we could use that same energy to surrender and flow, to surf the waves instead of getting tumbled by them. Make the best of it.
Mercury conjoins the Sun on the 25th. This is a new season for our mind-self relationship where we have hopefully integrated lots of fresh information and can now start focusing on new lessons. We also have the chance to lessen our over-identification with our internal monologues and take our whole selves more into account.
Mercury and then the Sun sextile Pluto throughout the 25th. This adds profound depth to the Mercury-Sun conjunction previously mentioned. Pluto likes to plough the less touched land, where skeletons or treasures may lay. So this Friday may drag our anaerobic thoughts and self-concepts out into the light. Recycle what you can and otherwise dispose of the rest with care.
Jupiter squares Pluto, also on the 25th, adding a huge exclamation point to the day. It’s high time to ‘fix’ our faulty belief systems and illuminate blind spots before we break down or crash into the unseen. If this process has been underway, then dive more deeply into the recesses and you could end up with more faith in the universe and resolve in yourself. The journey into the underworld is never simple, straightforward or easy, but great strides can be made and disasters averted. Plough on.
So it’s a lot, but that’s nothing new. It’s tricky, because we’re supposed to be internalizing and integrating while not over-identifying; the key is to not take anything too personally, even when it seems to come from our own selves. We’re also busy pushing it along and can’t afford to be too distracted by the tribulations of others, but should still be prepared to lend a hand when needed, if it can be afforded. It won’t all make sense, especially in the present, but we must stay in our integrity and trust that things will work out (or already have) whether we are granted that awareness or not. Do what you can now, because March is sure to be wild and wooly and April, well, it is plain freaky. It’s scary and big, even if you’ve been super on top of things, and there’s no time like the present.
