For me context is king–from that comes the understanding of everything.~Kenneth Noland
Tips for almanac use: All the aspects can be felt in advance of the date of occurrence. It is good policy to view these as due dates for various energies and prepare accordingly for one’s context. Some slower interactions can be felt a month in advance, so it’s wise to read ahead and ritual up. When we proactively manifest these symbols then the world doesn’t have to do it for us.
Wow, January is here and looking kind of fierce. It really starts with a bang, a concatenation of powerful aspects, on the 4th and then turns into more of a grind of ‘paradigm re-evaluation’ mixed with the continuing elimination of out-dated or unhelpful self-constructs. Once Jupiter moves into Aries on the 22nd the change train will be rolling along. It’s more ridiculously complex than saying that we gotta get on board, but it’s true.
There’s a Solar Eclipse in mid-Capricorn on the 4th, blasting us into the new year with challenges and change. It’s a very potent combination, geared towards getting everything in alignment and balance while breaking down remaining resistance. It is a tricky combination: on one hand we really would like to reach out for more connection with the world; on the other hand, we’re somewhat mired in our own stuff and should be too busy working through karmic/past buildups to be off frolicking. Take it easy.
Jupiter conjoins Uranus, also on the 4th, (as though the eclipse wasn’t enough). This adds another whole dose of crazy to the day, lending a hyper, jittery and explosive overtone that could be exciting and/or scary. Bold fluidity is good protocol, and it would be great for getting over and done with troublesome belief systems and other erratic influences.
Venus squares Neptune and then trines Uranus and Jupiter, also on the 4th. Whew. This aspect cluster centers on satisfaction versus disenchantment. Except that the disenchantment is more plugged in and reactionary to outside inanities than normal. It’s super complex, but it’s still helpful to think about it in simpler terms: Are we embracing the beauty and that which lends light to our journeys or wishing for escape and fantasizing about hypothetical alternate realities? Contemplative perspectives are fine as long as they don’t downgrade the vantage of reality. Count your blessings.
Venus moves into Sagittarius on the 7th, where she will stay until February 3rd. It will bring some fresher prospects and the lure of newness. Explore new perspectives around what fulfills you and your expectation-versus-belief issues. Step out of the routine.
The Sun squares Saturn on the 7th, pushing us to get over it and get on with it. Determination with adaptability is so much more functional than sticking stubbornly to outdated modalities. But make sure to be self-supportive.
Mercury sextiles Neptune and then squares Uranus on the 10th. This does not support clarity of vision unless we are deeply detached from identification with outcomes. Answers have a tricky habit of surfacing once we stop searching and questioning. Making mental room for life’s counter-intuitive side would be good.
Mercury squares Jupiter on the 11th, calling for some kind of paradigm shift. The way we look at it all could really use a shift towards more faith, or at least less obsession with understanding that which doesn’t ultimately make sense or would only yield unsatisfactory answers—this especially relates to asking ‘why’ concerning the actions and choices of others.
Mars sextiles Uranus on the 12th, putting us all more on edge with some jumpy and dangerous stirrings. We could be tempted towards righteous rebellion when we would be better served by focusing on breaking through our reactive and over-reactive tendencies. Do your own thing.
Mercury moves into Capricorn on the 13th through February 3rd. The first leg (until the 17th) will lean towards resolution but will require some intense effort and relaxed purging. Don’t fight it. Then it shifts towards rebuilding and reassembling our mental stability in preparation for the coming ride. Keep it real but not too serious. Laughter is precious.
Mars sextiles Jupiter on the 13th, stimulating some bold new ruminations and possibly inspiration. It is what it is, but we should still make the most of it.
Mars moves into Aquarius on the 15th, where he’ll be until February 22nd. Adjust the goal posts to facilitate the recognition of progress. Shooting high is fine, but make sure that our personal progress markers support our efforts with enough acknowledgment.
The Sun sextiles Uranus on the 17th, urging us to further get over and embrace ourselves concurrently. Our paths are rather unique and cross-comparisons are a super tricky business that often short changes one or the other. Context is crucial.
Mercury conjoins Pluto on the 17th, effectively marking the end of the ‘shadow period.’ This is crunch time or the deadline for dealing with whatever has been left undone or unaddressed. Fully letting ‘it’ go maybe too much to ask because we all take certain dynamics very seriously, but we must try to move away from the past and establish a better momentum.
The Full Moon is at the end of Cancer on the 19th. This is great for releasing our issues with people and humanity in favor of respect for the existential circus in which we are performing. The hang-ups and reactions mostly distract us from our more fundamental purposes, and are predicated on presumptions that what is good for us should be good for the rest. What do we really know?
The Sun sextiles Jupiter on the 19th, asking for some bold optimism when pre-assurance is not forthcoming and our vision of the future is compromised. At the least, it’s good for our psyches and our serotonin levels.
The Sun moves into Aquarius on the 20th. It’s an opportunity for some self-reinvention with more tempered outlooks and self-support. Most good things in life have to be internalized and owned before the external can consistently reflect an equivalent fabulosity. It’s always on us.
Jupiter moves into Aries on the 22nd (where he will remain until June 4th). This is the first of the year’s major shifts and will tend to add franticness and urgency to the mix. Basically, we have to take more action on our principles—to practice what we like to preach. Ideally, this should be done day-in day-out instead of being reserved for supposedly significant events. The consistency conditions us so that we are prepared for crossing the really big bridges. Above all, be centered in yourself.
Venus sextiles Saturn on the 23rd, hopefully facilitating some concrete relaxation. Take a break and reward yourself for all the effort, and thank those who support you.
Saturn stations retrograde on the 25th, through June 12th. This is pushing for more authenticity and a deepening of mutual respect in our relationships. Sometimes it’s productive to shake things up and make sure that it all stays real while being careful to avoid blame. Also, the severity of the astrological weather finds us all more delicate than usual, so an emphasis on respect and maturity is highly recommended.
Mercury squares Saturn on the 26th, giving us a chance to integrate all the recent lessons learned and weave them into our operating systems. Opt for the benefit of the doubt over harsh questioning. And seriously, work it out with yourself before involving others, or at least wait until some of the dust has settled.
So, yeah. January is up and down and all around. The theme does seem to be getting prepared for the unforeseeable future by really trying to get over, out of and into ourselves somehow in synchrony. We can’t really know what we’re doing or how well we’re doing it, but it’s a good idea to fake it ‘til you make it. Play the game with quiet confidence, whatever the circumstances.
