The obscure we see eventually.
The completely obvious, it seems, takes longer.

Tips for almanac use: All the aspects can be felt in advance of the occurrence. It is good policy to view these as due dates for various energies and prepare accordingly for your context. It’s akin to bringing an umbrella with you when rain is expected, but it also helps us to not take the weather personally. When we proactively manifest these symbols then the world doesn’t have to do it for us. Choose to be con(with)-siderate(the stars).
Well, 2014 is here and January is definitely setting the stage for another crazy weird year, the new normal of non-stop shifts and dips. The beginning of the month starts off with some big bangs as the grand cross cardinal plays itself out. This is volatile but can be super awesome if embraced and used to its fullest. Especially since if we can really make progress now, then April won’t have to be as full as it might otherwise be. The second half of January, after the 16th, is mellower but will probably find us processing and integrating all the recent tumult. I suppose we should be more used to this kind of pace, but it’s still an adjustment, and there’s not much time to ignore certain processes.
The New Moon is on the 1st at 3:14 am (pacific) in 10 degrees of Capricorn. Yowzer, yowzer, it should be wild and wooly. This lunation creates quite a close grand cross in cardinal signs: demanding we be as present as possible with all the good and bad and everything in between. There’s no simple translation because it will be very specific to each of us. But general old school wisdom would be appropriate: stay focused, flexible, contained, but open. We could use this new moon to set our highest intentions, but we’d better put release-minded ideas on that list as well.
The Sun conjoins Pluto on the 1st at 10:54 am (pacific), dredging our inner layers for more oldness to process out. It’s a really good time to release as many fears, hang-ups, self-abuse structures, defeatist attitudes, et cetera as possible. Don’t get hung up on regrets; focus instead on giving yourself adequate credit for having survived 2013, which was no normal year. Oh, and keep getting ready for 2014, which also promises many changes.
The Sun squares Mars on the 2nd at 4:14 pm (pacific), bringing any subsurface tension up to the surface to hopefully be worked through healthfully. This is not a time for rash actions or flippant responses. Taking a hike or engaging in any kind of physical activity would be a good outlet for this high energy square. But definitely be careful.
Mercury opposes Jupiter on the 2nd at 11:11 pm (pacific), pushing us to reassess any or all of our concepts, visions and goals. Are we working towards a vision that inspires us? Are we trying to bite off more than we can chew? Yes, we should have grand vistas, to a degree, but the mode of approach should probably be a functional one based on taking things task by task, day by day.
The Sun opposes Jupiter on the 5th at 1:12 pm (pacific), urging us to shift certain self-conceptualizations. The idea is to be true to ourselves for ourselves. This is so much easier said than done, but what choice do we have but to keep looking to embody more authentic versions of ourselves, despite whatever mayhem may be occurring around us? Stay heart-centered.
Mercury sextiles Saturn on the 6th at 12:51 am (pacific), offering us a chance to trim some deadwood from our minds and our to-do lists. This could also relate to how we view the projects ahead—whether we let ourselves get overwhelmed by looking at the long list or are able to maintain a step by step approach. Be sure to acknowledge the progress while contemplating what is left to be accomplished.
Mercury conjoins Venus on the 7th at 2:02 pm (pacific), giving us a potent chance to realign our minds with our deeper value systems. Are we attracting what we want? Are we enjoying that which we are graced with experiencing? Reaffirming the simplest of life’s treasures would be wise: love, understanding, mutual aid, et cetera. None of us are truly alone.
Mars squares Jupiter on the 8th at 2:36 pm (pacific), sponsoring some rampant impatience and tendencies towards distraction, or will it be vibrant inspiration and newfound motivation levels? It depends, but either way, let us seek the wisdom that will fuel our fires for life and ignore the distractions happening on our outskirts. Keep on moving.
Venus conjoins the Sun and then they both sextile Saturn on the 11th at 2:44 am, 4:25 am and 5:39 am (pacific), making for a rather potent day. It marks the peak of the Venus retrograde, the core chance to establish better internal/external balances and wholeness. The addition of Saturn to this dance makes it more blatantly required that we do what we can, but could also entice some of us into rebellion against the sense of obligation if this push towards a change is coming from the outside. Maturity, respect, and patience are required, but should be mixed with innocence and optimism–somehow. Focus on what has always mattered.
Mercury moves into Aquarius on the 11th at 1:35 pm (pacific), where he will stay until the 31st, leave, and then retrograde back from February 12th through March 17th. This will be an important preparation period for his return during the retrograde. How are we conceiving of the future? Well, this is tricky, because we should be contemplating our future goals, but still need to keep ourselves firmly planted in the present lest the other planets get upset. Maybe it’s as simple as focusing the light at the end of certain difficult tunnels.
The Full Moon is on the 15th at 8:52 pm (pacific) in 25 degrees of Cancer. It seems to focus on integrating and processing the recent external changes, especially with family, friends and loved ones. There has been a lot of focus on making ourselves more whole, and this lunation is reminding us to stay attentive to other people’s transformations and willing to adjust our own stance accordingly. However, it’s no time to be sacrificing our integrity for the sake of others. Strike a balance as best you can, but be available for others within reason.
Venus squares Mars on the 16th at 9:13 am (pacific), pulling any relationship tensions out into the open air. Relationships can be taken deeper and made more real, but honesty, integrity, and patience are definitely required. If things have been simmering and left unaddressed, then this could be a very volatile time. It may be better to work things out within before opening up a dangerous discussion. However, things should not be swept under the rug or they could come back to haunt us.
Mercury sextiles Uranus on the 16th at 10:25 pm (pacific), asking us to keep breaking through our mental confusions and silly ideas. But this comes with a twist of trying to integrate recent changes in consciousness into our bodies, and into our hearts. Thinking about thinking is not always as potent as feeling through our thoughts and then addressing them in response to that.
The Sun moves into Aquarius on the 19th at 7:51 pm (pacific), lightening the cardinal load a bit and getting us all feeling a little more social. It’s good for getting reconnected with friends we haven’t seen much of lately and playing catch up in other social milieus. Hopefully, we can pick up where we left off and catch each other up on all the craziness.
Mercury trines Mars on the 24th at 6:57 am (pacific), adding more social and communicative energy to the mix. Let’s share some ideas and stories and release some of our internal pressure by partaking of friends and associates. Brainstorming and getting reflection can help take our understandings that much deeper and will hopefully aid us in making decisions. Talk it out.
Mercury squares Saturn on the 25th at 3:56 am (pacific), emphasizing how much work we still have left to do and how we will approach it mentally. As we saw earlier this month, it’s wise to take things piece by piece, bite by bite, lest we get daunted into inactivity. Be sure to acknowledge progress and to cut slack where needed. Even if it’s 3 steps forward and 2 back, we’re still gaining ground.
The Sun sextiles Uranus on the 29th at 12:33 am (pacific), finding us wanting to blast through stuff quicker than is necessarily possible. However, sometimes, if we truly decide to be over things, then the whole shebang can just slough off instead of having to be processed through the long way. Either way, envision more awesome versions of yourself and start striving to feel it into being, heart first.
The New Moon is on the 30th at 1:38 pm (pacific) in 10 degrees of Aquarius. This one seems like a weird fast track opportunity to change, instead of waiting for April to bring all the fun. The trick is that we need to somehow find novel solutions and tweaks to long-established conundrums, and then implement them while the spark is still burning. Let go of the past and actualize brighter futures, at least for our internal selves.
Jupiter opposes Pluto on the 31st at 1:36 am (pacific), pushing us very strongly to clean out our closets, especially around beliefs, understandings, and family patterns. There’s nothing simple about this combination and its myriad connections. The simplification will have to be sponsored with our own capacity to understand things more deeply. But yeah, let us definitely try to get rid of outdated belief systems and various modus operandi. A lot of this could relate to how we partake of family patterns and what we have inherited through the family lines and how to better make the most of it. Especially important is to release any blame and regret fantasies and to remind ourselves that life is not exactly a walk in the park for any of us.
Mercury moves into Pisces on the 31st at 6:29 am (pacific), where he will stay briefly until heading backwards into Aquarius on February 12th, then back into Pisces on March 17th until April 7th. This is an important period of releasing past programming that hinders our future visions before the retrograde takes Mercury back into Aquarius. It would be good to spend time alone, in meditation or contemplation, or listening to music or reading poetry; anything that will help sponsor release. Let it flow downstream.
Venus stations direct on the 31st at 12:49 pm (pacific), bringing an end to the massive revision period in our relationships, work issues, family patterns, and value systems in general. Now we can start integrating the changes, start to clean and eventually fill the spaces that have been cleared. It’s still a challenging time, when balance and care are highly recommended. But as far as self-contentment goes, we are wise to give ample internal credit for whatever we have accomplished, or undone.
So yeah, January is still a wild month, but it’s really nothing new compared to December; it’s more of a follow-up. However, it is very new in that we can shortcut certain elements that are building until late April by dealing with them as much as we can now; nipping it in the buds. This isn’t exactly an easy aspiration to pull off, but the other option of letting things slide is not recommended at all. There isn’t much wiggle room if no effort is applied. Anyways, hopefully we will all stay on pace and manage to get some better rest at the same time, because the games have begun but the finals are still 4 months off. Let us keep it moving smoothly forward.
