Full Moon August 31st, 2012 @ 8 degrees Pisces 9:58 a.m. EDT 6:58 a.m. PDT
'The moon wedded the sunIn the first spring. The sun rose earlyThe moon departed from her.The moon wandered alone;Courted the morning star.Perkunas, greatly wroth,Cleft him with a sword.'Wherefore dost thou depart from the sun,Wandering by night alone,Courting the morning star?'"—from Slavonic myth
In the beginning the moon was masculine and the sun was feminine. In many world mythologies this was so. In Hindu myth the moon was the god Chandra, Arma to the Hittite’s, Khonsu to the Egyptians, Men to the Phygians, Sin/Nanna to the Sumerians. This thought to be so, based upon the fearful and mysterious effect the moon had on people, thus the masculine association. Women were associated with love and were not feared. In more recent times we know the moon as a symbol of the feminine. For instance in Egypt Isis (Usat) became goddess of the moon and her son Horus became the Sun. First written reference to Isis is 5th dynasty (2494-2345 B.C.). It is not clear if she acquired the association to the moon at this time or slightly later. In Greece, Artemis is goddess of the moon, Diana in Rome etc.It seems to me that at this rare occasion of a Blue Moon, we might leap hurdles and wed the notion of feminine/masculine—spirit just—and get on with creating a veritable paradise of peace and harmony here.We will take advantage of the reference to the color blue here in order to prepare our selves for the ultimate leap into the unknown and remember the Piscean capacity for feeling or knowing without experiencing. Trust. Blue is the color of sea and sky and all that is unending. Blue is the color of the 5th chakra, Vishuddha, the center of purification, hearing and speaking. Lord Shiva, represents the aspect of the Supreme Being (Brahman of the Upanishads) that continuously dissolves to recreate in the cyclic process of creation, preservation, dissolution and recreation of the universe. Lord Shiva’s throat area is blue as he is responsible for devouring poisons from the churning ocean that would have destroyed the Earth.Poisons are toxins, environmental and emotional that exist as part of our experience here for which we all take the responsibility for transmutation—we are all Shivas.Blue Moon. This is the second moon in August. A Blue Moon is traditionally the 3rd moon of a season in which there are four moons rather than just three. In a 19-year cycle (Metonic cycle based upon the solar calendar) a blue moon occurs 7 times. As this is a Pisces Blue Moon it seems appropriate to look at related symbolism . Pisces is the sign of spirit, of the collective unconscious (where symbolism is the language), where we dissolve boundaries and merge with the great sea. Hence, from a practical perspective there is very little upon which to hang your hat. Perfect! Without the ability to reference something from the past we are free to leap! And this chart is perfectly designed for such athleticism of mind, body and spirit.Ruler of the moon in Pisces is Neptune (in Pisces), which is in opposition to the ruler of the sun, Mercury at 29 degrees Leo. We are likely to be communicating from the heart in ways that do not involve words. This combination is not satisfied with the mundane and will initiate interaction of a more intimate nature that involves not just personal relating but collective connection. A great deal of compassion bubbles up from the masses, flows out and is absorbed by the masses. There is a real focus here on not taking things personally and negotiating for the highest good and that feels good.Though the 5th chakra is involved, the expression is different. When the 5th chakra is open negative expression is transformed into wisdom and learning. We are learning to be open and to allow the energy to rise. Chiron, right along side the moon at 7 degrees, ensures that healing of our deepest wound, to the soul, and feelings of being isolated from spirit are being dissolved; that the past merges with present and future to allow the freedom to experience this moment. Sometimes the past rises up in order to find harmony with what is and the perfection of all that has been.Pluto sextiles this pair and Mars in Scorpio trines it providing exceptional transformational momentum. A lot of pressure to take the big step forward and upward. Do not fear. Whatever you think you must relinquish to succeed is merely an attempt by the mind to prevent you from embracing the unknown. In other words it is not true. Whatever your mind tells you is not true. Also, the Mercury/Neptune opposition squares the nodal axis forming a grand square, further insistence that we understand the Self not merely through the physical senses (south node in Taurus) but as the ever present, unchanging aspect of all that is (north node in Scorpio/3rd level the white dove of spirit). On the West Coast this Full Moon occurs in the 6th and 12th houses (moon in 6th sun in 12th). The experience here is one of self perfected and conscious awareness of this fact. And the generosity of spirit that enables us to share great compassion with others. On the East coast it is a 5th house 11th house experience and again freedom to express self and awareness of Self as perfect; that being the higher goal.I am not unaware of the flip side of all that has been said here but why create from a place of fear or lack? It was stated that this is a chart for revolutionary and evolutionary advancement of the human collective soul. We must not forget a yod to Uranus (revolution for evolution), from a sun Mars sextile. The individual will evolve driven by a deeper understanding of the physical self and a state of pure awareness.Jupiter the ancient ruler of Pisces, wisdom and expansion is at the top of this chart, conjunct the MC in Gemini and will gregariously and generously share any and all experiences that will contribute to the graceful understanding of our existence.I think the Sabian symbol for 9 degrees Pisces is particularly apropos of course, “a jockey spurs his horse, intent on outdistancing his rivals”, the ‘athleticism’ and know how required to overcome fears. Empowered by a sense of absolute freedom from limitations we have the potential to leave behind everything that adds weight to an otherwise weightless existence. We are no longer influenced by that which is external to us.During this rare occasion we are given a rare opportunity to by pass the mundane, to utilize intuition or the deep knowing of Self to step out of the mind/body association and embrace life in all of its forms with passion and compassion. Isn’t it beneficial to find Venus in Cancer being checked by Saturn lest the affections tend toward personal indulgence. With the chart dominated by planets in water we haven’t far to go, just deeper.
