The Blessings of a Wild Woman

Healthy wolves and healthy women share certain psychic characteristics: keen sensing, playful spirit, and a heightened capacity for devotion. Wolves and women are relational by nature, inquiring, possessed of great endurance and strength. They are intuitive, intensely concerned with their young, their mates, and their pack. They are experienced in adapting to constantly changing circumstances; they are fiercely stalwart and very brave.

I am blessed that I came through a Wild Woman; a woman not so tamed by her times or circumstances. For the past two weeks my mother, sisters and I have journeyed together from ICU, to the neurological floor, to transitional care. The journey was occasioned by a fall and a good, hard crack to the head. How life changes in an instant. The journey was both excruciatingly beautiful and exquisitely painful, and certainly provided me with an opportunity for reflection.

My mother and I are very different people. Her idea of a good time is non-stop activity loaded with as many people as can she can fit in. My idea of a good time is quieter, more solitary. She’s at a crowded party; I’m at a silent retreat.

And, yet everything that is most precious to me and feeds my soul was seeded in me by her. She gave me a love of the written word (yes, I am the daughter of a librarian and a writer), and a love of beauty and nature. She imbued me with an irrepressible curiosity for what this human adventure is all about. She taught me that not only did I have the right but that I had the responsibility to sort out my own beliefs and walk my path. She demonstrates through her living; a playful spirit, devotion, endurance, strength and bravery.

I am blessed that I came through a Wild Woman.

My mother is back home and in full recovery mode.

Gratitude. Gratitude. Gratitude
