Earlier this year, I gave a free evening presentation and slideshow on the runes. (Another is being offered on 11/11!) I shared a bit about the history of the runes and their origins linguistic and oracular. I also shared the story of my journey with the runes; how they came into my life; and how I’ve lived with them since 1989. What will your runic journey look like?
Many people who come to rune readings at Paradise Found have never heard of the runes. At Autumn Equinox, we held an Intuitive Arts Tasting event, where six readers came together to offer a variety of different modalities at a great price. The same questions seemed to come up among patrons trying to choose among the wonderful offerings: What IS a rune reading, anyway? What does it look like? How does it go? This is an introductory guide to help you on your way with the runes.
Coming to a rune reading is very similar to coming to a tarot reading. In my set of runes, I have carved each symbol into a stone of lapis lazuli. Lapis is considered a stone of cosmic consciousness. Because stones carry energy, my practice is to draw the runes myself, to keep the energy signature clear as I connect with Spirit during your reading.
When you come to a rune reading, you might have a specific question or issue in life around which you are seeking support. As we sit side by side, you begin to unpack your story. I invite you to speak freely, almost stream of consciousness, as I hold the runes and ask Spirit to bring what would be most helpful for you at this time.
As you speak, I await a sensation in the hand that cradles the runes. Following the sensation, I carefully track what rune is there, and draw it from the bag “blind.” Placing it on the cloth, I share with you the myriad meanings associated with that rune. The next step is crucial: Having heard these meanings, I invite you to bring your own innate wisdom to this conversation: What images, past events, questions/ideas does it elicit? How does it resonate with the issue you have brought? What opportunity does this particular rune offer you in light of your own lived experience?
Depending on the type of reading you have chosen, this process will repeat 2, 4, or even 8 more times. Each time, we ground into your presenting issue or question, and orient ourselves along the pathways of your chosen reading to gain deeper levels of perspective that can support you. Ultimately, everything offered is tempered by your free will. I cannot “tell you your future.” I will not tell you what to do. The runes offer us a snapshot into the current moment and the energetics behind what is apparent in life. Often they can point us in the direction of nice clear steps we can choose to take. Sometimes, they ask us questions that invite us to do deeper personal work outside the reading session. Again, the whole experience is bounded by your free will and choice to engage with what is offered or not.
So let’s talk about the different reading options available. In general, your options for readings are dependent on how much time you have. At Paradise Found, I offer 15, 30, and 60 minute readings. In private practice, I offer 15, 30, 45, 60, and 90 minute sessions.
Three-Rune Draw (15 minutes)—This reading is for the client who either has a succinct question or is coming for a “spiritual check in.” Two ways I typically work with this reading include 1) looking at the past, present, and future of a situation or 2) diving in with a question and seeking continual clarification of what surfaces. I have found that most people who start with this reading uncover more material than the 15 minutes allows. It’s a great starting point if you’re feeling inquisitive and your issue isn’t very complicated. ($30)
Four Directions Spread (mi
nimum 30 minutes)—This rune reading unfolds over a minimum of 30 minutes, and can easily go longer depending on how deep you want to go on each layer. If you have a lot of context that you are bringing in, it’s best to plan for 60 minutes. We start in the center, looking at the heart of the matter. There is usually a theme underneath what the client presents. Then, depending on the circumstances, I usually start in the South, the place of learning; then to the West, the place of harvest; then to the North, the place of the ancestors; and finally to the East, the place of new beginnings and action steps. This seems to be the most popular reading, going deeper than a three-rune draw, and often deep enough to instigate change, depending on the length of time you wish to spend with it. (30 minutes=$50; 60 minutes= $90)
Nine Worlds Reading (minimum 60 minutes)—I’ve worked with this reading two different ways. Both tie in to the nine realms of Norse mythology and also tie in to aspects of the self that can be sourced for insight and support. In some respects, it's almost like a multi-layered persona interview, going deeper into the self to access innate wisdom. This is a reading for deep level personal work, or for complicated matters. Definitely an hour needed for this one; in my private practice, about 50% of the time, it becomes a 90 minute reading due to the client wishing to unpack things further. (60 minutes=$90)
In addition to these three styles of readings, I also offer the exceptionally personalized Power of Your Name reading and the beautifully customized Couple’s Reading.
The Power of Your Name (time depends on the length of your name)—This reading looks at the construction of your name and any variations of runes that may be used to construct it. We look at the meanings of each rune, and you choose which combination best resonates. Then we explore how the runes can be combined into a bindrune, a personal talisman that embodies all the energies of the runes in the name. Many people discover parallels with their life’s story or qualities they seek to manifest; these qualities are your birthright! Tapping into the runic presence of your name can support you in moving into the next phase of personal development. Names 6 letters or less can be done in 30 min ($50). More than six letters: 60 min ($90).
Couple’s work begins with a name reading for each client. We go into some depth on each name, then look for obvious connections and challenges between the run of the two names. We also explore the themes that prevail in the runes of both names together. Clients are then shown how to practice combining the names into a single bindrune, which is an ongoing project that they do on their own in their own time. A follow up reading of 60 minutes is recommended to explore what additional runes reveal themselves in the design that is ultimately chosen to ensure the overall intention is properly rendered. This is a wonderful way to deepen relationship and makes an excellent engagement, marriage, or anniversary experience for the couple. I’d tried learning to read runes myself many years ago but didn’t feel I had the ability, so I jumped at the chance to have Sierra read for me.
