Greetings Fellow Tree-Huggers!

"Trees are poems that the earth writes upon the sky."

greetings fellow tree-huggers

Greetings to our friends and community,

As summer winds to an end, I wanted to share one of my most beautiful summer reads--the Pulitzer Prize winning novel, The Overstory by Richard Powers. It may be the first novel written about trees!

It is an exquisitely written tale that reveals a vast, slow, interconnected, resourceful, magnificently inventive and almost invisible to us world where our human time frame and 24 hour news cycle have no home. Here is a passage I found particularly awe inspiring:

“It’s a miracle, she tells her students, photosynthesis: a feat of chemical engineering underpinning creation’s entire cathedral. All the razzmatazz of life on Earth is a free-rider on that mind-boggling magic act. The secret of life: plants eat light and air and water, and the stored energy goes on to make and do all things.

She leads her charges into the inner sanctum of the mystery: Hundreds of chlorophyll molecules assemble into antennae complexes. Countless such antennae arrays form up into thylakoid disc. Stacks of these discs align in a single chloroplast. Up to a hundred such solar powered factories power a single plant cell.  Millions of cells may shape a single leaf. A million leaves rustle in a single gingko.”

Magic! Plant a tree. Save a tree. Love a tree.

Participate in the miracle and contribute to the razzmatazz of life.

May you sit in the shade of a tree someone had the forethought to plant.

May the future sit in the shade of a tree you had the forethought to plant.
